Drive corridors
Livingston sits between Bozeman and Billings on I-90, with US-89 opening south toward Yellowstone's north entrance. Arrive with a dinner reservation or a simple downtown walk in mind—the best first hour is on Main Street, not in park traffic.
Most fly-in visitors land at BZN and drive east on I-90 about 30 minutes to Livingston—usually enough time for Gil's Goods or Neptune's on a late arrival. Rental cars beat shuttles when Saturday includes Paradise Valley or Mammoth.
Billings sits roughly 110 miles east on I-90—a straightforward interstate run through Big Timber and the Yellowstone River valley. Late-summer smoke and winter ice can slow the final Livingston exit; east-side hotels work well for tired drivers who want to sleep before downtown dinner.
Travelers from Glacier country or western Montana usually reach Livingston on I-90 through Butte and Bozeman. It is a long day from Missoula; overnight in Bozeman or Livingston beats a dark arrival if the drive already ran ten hours.
US-89 south from Livingston is the scenic Yellowstone River corridor toward Emigrant, Chico Hot Springs, and Gardiner. Treat it as a daytime road—wildlife, anglers, and summer traffic make the two-lane slower than the map suggests.
After you arrive
After BZN or I-90, check in at Murray Hotel or an east-side property, then walk to Gil's Goods or Neptune's while daylight lasts. Saving Mammoth for tomorrow avoids a stressful same-day park arrival.
From Livingston, US-89 south to Gardiner is roughly 50 miles; Mammoth terraces add park driving beyond the Roosevelt Arch. Start early if Lamar Valley is on the list—wildlife viewing rewards dawn, not a post-lunch departure.
North Yellowstone roads and Paradise Valley passes see snow and ice while downtown stays open. Carry chains when NPS or MDT advisories call for them, and confirm park entrance status before promising a Mammoth day to the group.
